Risk of Rain 2 Review

By HIDEY_RUNNYpigs

A few months ago my friend got addicted to Risk of Rain 2 (RoR2). RoR2 is a roguelike third-person shooter developed by Hopoo Games and published by Gearbox Publishing. It is set on an alien planet where players, known as survivors, must battle hordes of monsters to progress.

RoR2 is set on an alien planet and the survivor from an accident (you) have to survive the monsters that come out of the ground to fight you. Each stage has a teleporter that once activated will spawn a boss that you have to defeat. Once you defeat the teleporter boss the teleporter will take you to the next stage.

In Risk of Rain 2, each survivor has four types of abilities: Primary, Secondary, Utility, and Special. The Primary is a basic attack with no cooldown, only reload on specific survivors. Secondary abilities are stronger, often with added effects, and have short cooldowns. Utility skills usually focus on mobility, allowing survivors to dodge. Lastly, special abilities are powerful moves with longer cooldowns, often providing high damage.

The longer you spend in each level, the more the difficulty increases, so you have to try and find the teleporter as fast as possible. Fighting the enemies becomes harder and harder so you will need to gather items that buff you to gain as much of an advantage as possible.

You will be rewarded with coins as you kill enemies. These coins can be used to open chests, repair drones, and be offered to shrines. Coins that you earn won’t carry on to the next stage, but crucially drones, items and equipment will! Getting items is a major part of the gameplay in RoR2. If you watch professional streamers playing this game, you will see that they will accumulate a bunch of items (stored in the box on the top of the screen). There are many ways to get items, for example  you can kill enemies, buy chests, or make offerings to shrines.

The art style of Risk of ain 2 is a blend of low-poly aesthetics and vibrant colours, making the game very visually comfortable to play. Each stage has a different saturated colour palette which makes them each unique and very immersive. I also like how each of the player characters are designed, and their animations are also very good.

The music in RoR2 is very well made and changes depending on the current state of the player. At the start of each stage, the sound design feels very calm and atmospheric. When you enter combat with the bosses, the ambiance will be replaced with more energetic music.

Overall, I really like Risk of Rain 2, especially when I can play it with friends. Playing RoR2 with friends (especially if they’re very experienced) can be very fun as it it much easier because even if you die, your friends can still complete the stage for you.
