My Skate 3 Experience

It was on May 11, 2010 that the world was introduced to the third installment of the Skate series, however this is about my experience with Skate 3. I started playing Skate 3 during 2018 when I inherited the PS3 SuperSlim from my brother, since he got a better one.

When I started playing the game, I was more interested in the free play aspects of the game rather than focusing on the story. I wasn’t as invested in playing the game to progress, instead I wanted to find glitches and quirks the game had. Cheats were a big part of the reason I wanted to play this game, as some of them are hilariously silly like the ‘Miniskaters’ cheat (below), the ‘McFly’ cheat, and the ‘Zombie’ cheat.

As an aside, something to be mentioned is that the ‘Zombie’ cheat is actually a little bit misleading in the name. You see, this cheat turns all of the pedestrians into zombies, with a side effect of adding about twice as many pedestrians, but the thing is that they don’t look like zombies, and they don’t bite you. They sort of just run at you, smack you out of your way, and just generally try to make your day miserable and horrible. It also turns everything sepia and looks a bit moody, but still, it is pretty cool, cuz it is zombies!

As I mentioned earlier, when I started playing Skate 3, my main focus for me was the free play aspect that captivated me. However, when I wanted to customize my character, I was limited to what I started with unless I had completed challenges and progressed through the game’s storymode. Because of this, I then wanted to make sure that I got everything I could from each challenge I did, and unless it was too hard or I got fed up trying over and over again, I’d move on to the next one.

When it came to playing online, I couldn’t really find anyone on the servers, which shouldn’t have been surprising, given that the game was nearly 10 years old at the time. I would find the occasional player or two, but there wasn’t really anyone consistent. This was a bit disappointing, but I moved on quickly and had plenty of fun with the game on my own.

That was until one night in 2020 or 2021, when I paused a Skate 3 session to the bathroom. When I came back, my PS3 simply was not running. I tried everything to bring it back, but nothing worked. I think that for as long as I live I will never find out what happened, and it will forever remain a mystery.
