Fireboy and Watergirl, a truly classic game that anyone would recognise, its simple design and unique characters has been a staple of kids’ childhoods for over a decade. Created in 2009 by Oslo Albet, similar to flash games, it was enjoyed by bored kids and then captured their attention with its engaging gameplay.
The 2D platformer is a simple game based around two playable characters, Fireboy and Watergirl, funnily enough. You control each character with a set of buttons on your keyboard, usually WASD for one and the Up, Down, Left and Right arrow keys for the other. The aim of the game is easy: get your two little characters to the end of the level in one piece, but obstacles and puzzles make the game a little more complicated. Some of the obstacles are just pools of ether lava or water that only one character can get through; others can be a series of doors and buttons that you need to press in certain orders to get them both through.
There are six games in the series so far: F&W In the Forest Temple, F&W In the Light Temple, F&W In the Ice Temple, F&W In the Crystal Temple, F&W Elements, and F&W Fairy Tales. This long list provides you with hours of different gameplay elements to enjoy while playing this series.
Fireboy and Watergirl is a well-made children’s game, a flash game concept with a stylised twist. Hopefully, in the future, it will still be as relevant to kids as it was to me.
